Reciprocal Borrowing at Notre Dame

Reciprocal borrowing is an arrangement that allows for students of the University to borrow materials from the libraries of affiliated organizations and for the students of those affiliated organizations to borrow from our libraries.
All reciprocal borrowing occurs under one of two frameworks – the University Libraries Australia scheme or individual, locally negotiated agreements (see below for details about both frameworks).

University Libraries Australia (ULA)

ULA is a national reciprocal borrowing scheme co-ordinated by the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL).  The scheme operates at the discretion of the loaning University Library.  Not all libraries participate or agree to register students from a particular University, and some charge an annual registration fee (any fees are the responsibility of the borrower not the University of Notre Dame Australia).

Notre Dame students and staff borrowing at other Universities

The decision about whether to register borrowers under the scheme is at the discretion of the university in question. Not all universities will automatically offer registration to students and staff of Notre Dame. Borrowing under these schemes is a privilege not a right and can be withdrawn for all students if it is being abused by individuals.  The University Library will treat any complaints about this as serious matters and will take this up with the individuals concerned.

Western Australia

    • The University of Western Australia do not extend the ULA service to staff or students of the University of Notre Dame Australia.
    • Curtin University only extends the ULA service to academic staff and postgraduate thesis (Masters and PhD) students of the University of Notre Dame Australia.
    • Notre Dame extends the service to both staff and students of both of these universities.
    • Murdoch University and Edith Cowan University both provide services to staff and student of Notre Dame and we reciprocate.

New South Wales

    • the University of Sydney extends services to staff and students of the University of Notre Dame Australia and we reciprocate. The University of Sydney extends services free of charge to staff of the University of Notre Dame Australia but charge an annual registration fee for students. Notre Dame do not charge an annual registration fee.
    • the University of New South Wales does not currently extend the ULA service to staff and students of the University of Notre Dame Australia and we do not reciprocate.
    • Other NSW universities should be approached for borrowing privileges under the ULA agreement.

Conditions of borrowing:

    • To borrow at one of the participating universities you will need to produce proof of current enrolment.  Most of these universities will accept a staff or student card with a current year sticker, but if you are travelling interstate you should check on the requirements of the university you are visiting before you visit.
    • All loans from other universities attract fines for late returns and full cost recovery (including admin charges) for lost books.  In both cases these amounts will be charged to Notre Dame and we will withhold statements of results and issue invoices until we recover these debts.

Staff or students who experience difficulty with accessing borrowing rights at other universities should let the Notre Dame Library know via the Feedback Form.

Locally Negotiated Reciprocal Agreements

Periodically the University Library will negotiate a local reciprocal agreement with organizations where there is a mutual benefit to both organizations.  These agreements will be broadly similar to the terms and conditions of the University Libraries Australia (ULA) scheme, but will be individually negotiated and may be narrower in focus.  The current agreements are listed below.

Fremantle Campus

Fremantle Campus agreements operate in relation to the St Teresa’s Library and do not cover the Galvin Medical Library and Craven Law Library.

    • TAFE WA – this agreement covers the 2007 calendar year and provides for access by Notre Dame students to the network of TAFE libraries in metro and rural Western Australia (click here to check TAFE locations) .  TAFE students have access to the St Teresa’s Library at the Fremantle Campus (click here to check the location and opening times for this library)
    • Film and Television Institute (Fremantle) – FTI donated part of its library to the St Teresa’s Library in return for access by their students to these library materials.  The FTI materials are identified on the catalogue by the running a ‘general keyword’ search for Film and Television Institute.  FTI members are welcome to use the Library’s serials collection within the Library and can create a photocopy account to purchase copy credits (please ask at the IT service desk for assistance). Click here to see a FAQs page for FTI borrowers.
