The University Library uses two methods of providing access to copies of free-to air television broadcasts – TV News and recording to DVD upon request from staff.
TV News
The TV Newsdatabase provides comprehensive coverage of Australian news and current affairs (See Title list)
The content can be saved to a hard drive, memory stick or DVD for use in the future or uploaded from the database into a Learning Management System such as Blackboard. You can also direct students to specific programmes via a URL (available in the database record for the item).
Content can be used subject to the following conditions:
The content can only be used for educational purposes
Access is restricted to University of Notre Dame staff and students.
Any copies of the content presented to students are accompanied by the Copyright Part VA Warning Notice. You can get a copy of the notice here.
The content is streamed so it is more effective and cheaper to stream an item you are likely to use again once and capture or save this file rather than stream it each time you need it.
Recording to DVD
The University’s can use the Screenrights licence to copy free to air television broadcasts and ‘burn’ these copies to DVD.
Staff can also make copies of broadcasts at home and either keep these for their teaching or provide copies to the Library for inclusion in one or more collections. The Screenrights licence provides for the production of multiple copies of an item provided they are being used for educational purposes and are labelled with the appropriate copyright notice.
What we copy
The University Library copies the following programmes each time they are broadcast:
Hot Docs (SBS Tues 10.00pm)
Inside Australia (SBS Weds 8.00 pm)
Finding Copies of TV programmes
Copies of these are available in the St Teresa’s Library (Fremantle Campus) within two weeks of being broadcast. All programmes are catalogued on the Library Portal and can be found by conducting a title search for the name of the programme (e.g Hot Docs).
Upon request we will make additional copies for inclusion in the collections of other University libraries. Please place a request using the Resource Recommendation form for the library you would like to have the programme available at. Please include the call number of the item from the catalogue and make it clear that this is where you saw the item.
Requests to copy an upcoming broadcast
Requests for copies of content not captured by us regularly or not captured within TV News (See the title list for TV News here) can be placed by completing the request form. Copies can be added to the collections of any of the libraries.
Requests for copies of past broadcasts
If you want access to a programme broadcast which is not within TV News and which we did not record to DVD the Library may be able to acquire a copy from a library that did copy the broadcast or from a commercial copying service. Please place a request using the Resource Recommendation form for the library you would like to have the programme available at.
What you can do with the copies
The Screenrights licence is versatile and flexible - staff can...
Copy entire programs or excerpts
Make copies of copies
Show tapes in class or the library
Keep copies as resources in your library
Make up compilation tapes of material you have copied
Copy in any format - VHS, DVD, CD, PC
Copy anything on free-to-air TV, pay-TV, Radio
Email copies to students or make them available online for students or staff
Broadcast copies within your institution
Copy programs from home (applies to teachers and students) on behalf of your educational institution
Make the copy available on your intranet (as long as it's secure so only your students and staff can view it).
The only requirements are that you have a Screenrights licence, that the copy is made for the educational purposes of the institution, and that it is labelled with the relevant Copyright Notice.
It is important to note that these conditions do not apply to DVDs that you buy or that you borrow from another library or shop.
Pay TV
The Screenrights licence we hold covers the University for copying material from pay TV services as well as free-to-air. Staff with pay TV subscriptions are allowed to copy material from these services and show it in class. Copies must be labelled with the relevant Copyright Notice.
We would be grateful if you would offer any content you consider useful to the University Library for copying and inclusion in the Library collections.
Finding out what is being broadcast
A good source of information about upcoming broadcasts is the ‘Enhance TV’ website .
EnhanceTV is a unique web resource for Australian and New Zealand educators, providing you with information on educational TV programs and films, as well as free study guides and feature articles to help you teach using television in the classroom.
