The Provosts
The University has two Provosts, one for the Fremantle and Broome Campuses, and one for the Sydney Campus.
The Provost of the Fremantle and Broome Campuses is Professor Mark McKenna
. He is also Deputy Vice Chancellor, Fremantle.
The Provost of the Sydney Campus is Professor Hayden Ramsay. Professor Ramsay is also Deputy Vice Chancellor, Sydney and Executive Dean of Philosophy and Theology.
From 2008 some duties related to management of research and higher degrees on the Fremantle and Broome Campuses have been delegated to the Associate Provost, Professor Peta Sanderson. Professor Sanderson is also Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in Fremantle.
The Provost is a Principal Officer of the University, and is the senior University officer responsible for academic matters on the relevant campuses of the University. The Provost has a variety of responsibilities in this role, delegated through the Vice Chancellor.
The Provost chairs the Academic Council and sits on a number of other University Campus committees, such as the Research Committee, the Core Curriculum Committee, the Human Research Ethics Committee and the University Executive Council.
The Provost provides leadership in the academic pursuit of the Objects of the University. In this regard the Provost is given the special responsibility of providing leadership in the development of the University as a Catholic institution of Higher Education. The Provost has a key role in academic policy matters such as Advanced Standing and Exemptions.
The Provost oversees some academic staffing matters such as the Promotions Process on the relevant campus.
The Provost is responsible for oversight of Higher Degrees by research, especially for the Doctor of Philosophy and the professional doctorates.
The Provost is responsible for oversight of the Boards of Examiners on the relevant campus, and has particular roles in changes of student grades and academic standing outside the meetings of those Boards. In this role the Provost is the key University Officer in consideration of appeals by students against the findings of Boards of Examiners.
The Provost has a key role in oversight of disciplinary matters concerning the academic behaviour of students – such as a student who has copied material for an essay from the internet.
The Provost has a key role in student appeals.
Advanced standing and Exemption
Students should examine the University General Regulations (link) and follow the process there. In general they will need to discuss the matter with their Dean of School but they may make enquiries with the Acting Manager, Registrar's Office, Ingrid Dias idias@nd.edu.au.
Appeals
Students wishing to make an appeal through the Provost are directed to the Regulations.
It is important to be aware that the range of penalties applicable is different (and potentially more severe) when a matter is heard through the Provost and University Discipline Committee than when the matter is dealt with within the School.
Students wishing to make a complaint may write to the Provost of their particular campus. Should they wish to progress to a formal grievance they should consult the University Grievance Policy.
