Health Sciences Research and Education Building for Notre Dame’s Fremantle Campus
In 2006, the University was successful in its application to the Commonwealth Government for capital funding for what is the first building the University has constructed in the West End of Fremantle.
It received a grant of $2.675 million from the Systemic Infrastructure Initiative as part of the Commonwealth Government's Backing Australia's Ability - An Innovation Action Plan for the Future. The project cost over $6.0 million for a building which houses the new Institute for Health and Rehabilitation Research.
The Institute will focus on partnerships in research and innovation to improve community health and wellbeing. It will bring together the significant professional capability and interest within the Health Sciences, including Exercise Science, Preventive Health and Physiotherapy, the School of Medicine, particularly those with the responsibility for General Practice and Community Medicine, Social and Behavioural Science including Counselling, Education and Nursing..
Vice Chancellor, Dr Peter Tannock said “This is a most exciting development for Notre Dame. It will do much to advance our research and quality in these vital areas. It is the largest capital grant the University has received.”
The Centre is overseen by a Board comprising experts from the University’s Schools of Education, Health Sciences, Nursing and Medicine and is linked electronically to the University’s Broome Campus which is a base for Kimberley Aboriginal community research and also to the Sydney Campus.
Building commenced on the site, lot 57 Henry Street, Fremantle, in April 2007 and was completed in March 2008.
